Many compounds containing main group elements such as phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon are great importance not only as main raw materials for a wide variety of organic industrial chemistry such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers, and electronics, but also from the viewpoint of energy resource problems, the creation of functional materials utilizing abundant main group elements as substitutes for rare elements should be attracting much attention. The field of main group element chemistry aims to extract and systematically understand the elemental properties of a wide variety of individual elements, based on the idea that the properties of the elements themselves give rise to the diversity of compounds. In particular, the root of their unique functions and properties lies in the diversity of bonding among the heavier main group elements, and their ability to flexibly change their valence and coordination numbers compared to carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and other second-row elements, which play a central role in organic chemistry. From such background, in recent years, the creation of new substances based on the basic framework of heavier main group elements has been vigorously pursued, and many new substances with various functions have been synthesized. It is expected that new functional materials and new reactions will be developed in the future by taking advantage of the characteristics of the elements. This seminar aims to establish a solid joint research system especially between Japan and Germany, which are leading the field of main group element chemistry internationally. The meeting will be held for young researchers and graduate students in main group element chemistry research field in Japan.
